A Hanafi jurist and judge in the city of Kairouan. After beginning his education in Ifrīqiyyaẗ, he moved to the Machreq in 172/788 to follow the teachings of Mālik ibn Anas (d. 179/795) in Medina. Later, he went to the city of Kufaẗ(Koufa) to follow the teachings of the two disciples of Abū Hanīfaẗ (d. 150/767): Abū Yūsuf (d. 182/798) and especially Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Šaybānī (d. 189/804). He then went to Egypt and followed the teachings of the most famous of Mālik ibn Anas disciples, especially ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim (d.191/806). In 181/797, Asad returned to Qayrawān(Kairouan) where he initially taught both Hanafi and Maliki jurisprudence [fiqh] due to his passage through a period of uncertainty regarding cults. He ended up giving precedence to Hanafism which was, at the time, the official cult of the Aghlabids. Asad established a dynamic Hanafī school in Qayrawān(Kairouan) and was appointed judge of Qayrawān(Kairouan) after 203/818. In 212/827, he led a campaign against Sicily and died during the siege of Saraqustaẗ (Syracuse). He is buried in Siqilliayaẗ(Sicile).
